The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak

Two teenagers, Kostas and Defne, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on their home island. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, bearing witness to their growing forbidden love and eventually the war that separates them. Decades later, Kostas returns as a botanist looking for native species and lost love. Years later a fig tree grows in the back garden of Ada’s house in London. This tree is her only connection to her family’s troubled history and her complex identity as she seeks to untangle years of secrets to find her place in the world
