This month's book is: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
Yaa Gyasi's acclaimed 2020 novel about Gifty, a Ghanaian-American neuroscience PhD student at Stanford, who studies addiction and depression while grappling with her family's history of trauma, faith, and loss, particularly her brother's opioid addiction and her mother's severe depression. The book explores the tension between science and faith, the immigrant experience, and the search for meaning in suffering, following Gifty as she tries to understand her family's pain through her research and memories of her childhood in Alabama.
